Sledgemoor Coppice

A proper woodland walk through Sledgemoor Coppice will take you into one of Herefordshire's quieter corners, just a few miles south-west of Worcester. The coppice itself is working woodland - you'll spot the evidence of managed forestry straight away, with patches of younger growth interspersed between established trees. It's the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think, which counts for something these days.

The main appeal here is straightforward: peaceful woodland walking without the tourist crowds you'd find at more famous forest spots. The terrain is manageable, mostly flat to gently rolling, making it reasonable for families with older kids or anyone after a gentle ramble rather than a proper hike. You won't find visitor facilities or infrastructure - no cafes, no car park attendants, no signage telling you what tree is which. Bring a map or download offline GPS, because you'll need it.

Walkers will get the most from Sledgemoor. It's the sort of place you visit for an hour or two, not an afternoon-long expedition. There's something restorative about the quiet here, but it won't hold your attention for hours unless you're genuinely keen on woodland ecology or bird watching. Winter and early spring are probably your best bets - the paths are firmer and the canopy thinner, so you see further.
