Slay Barrow

A Neolithic burial mound on the Wiltshire downs, Slay Barrow is the sort of place that rewards a bit of leg work but doesn't demand much in return. You get a modest earthwork - nothing dramatic, just a grassy rise among the fields - but stand there and you're looking at something five thousand years old. Proper perspective stuff.

It's genuinely free and accessible any time, which means you can arrive when the light suits you or the mood takes. Allow twenty minutes if you're poking around properly, less if you just want the photos and the historical tick. The walk from the nearest road is straightforward enough, though the final approach can be damp after rain.

This one's for the archaeology heads and serious walkers rather than casual daytrippers. Kids might get restless unless they're the sort who find ancient burial sites properly interesting. It doesn't have the visitor infrastructure of somewhere like Stonehenge near Salisbury - no café, no interpretation boards, no crowds either - which is either a feature or a bug depending on what you're after.

If you're basing yourself at Brades Acre Camp Site or Little Owls Camping near Devizes, Slay Barrow slots in nicely as a morning walk alongside the other Wiltshire archaeology scattered across the downs. Combine it with a proper explore of the chalk landscape and you've got something worthwhile. On its own it's brief, but as part of the bigger Neolithic picture round here, it adds genuine value.
