Skidby Mill

A working windmill just outside Beverley that actually grinds flour - which is rarer than you'd think. Skidby Mill is a proper Victorian tower mill, all red brick and business, standing in what feels like the middle of nowhere until you realise you're barely a few miles from town.

Inside, you can watch the machinery doing its thing on milling days, which is genuinely hypnotic if you're into how things actually work. The volunteers who run it know their stuff and won't bore you with waffle. Kids find it interesting for about 45 minutes, though the narrow stairs aren't for the unfit or those with a head for heights.

Timing matters here - check before you go, as opening hours are limited and it's only milling on certain days. That said, even from outside it's a striking building, and the setting's peaceful if you fancy a countryside walk without the fuss.

If you're based at Butt Farm Caravan Park or Manor Farm Camping, both within a couple of miles, Skidby works as a half-morning sortie before tackling something bigger. It's not a full day out, but it's the kind of thing that sticks with you because it's actual heritage you can see moving, not behind glass. Bit of a trek for a flying visit, but worth planning round if you're interested in industrial heritage or how grain becomes bread.
