Skaters' Meadow

A wet meadow just outside Cambridge that's genuinely worth a diversion if you're into birds or wildflowers. The reserve sits on what was once common grazing land, and the boggy conditions mean it floods seasonally - which sounds grim but actually creates ideal habitat for waders and water plants that you won't see everywhere.

On a decent day you'll spot lapwings, snipe, and if you're lucky, marsh harriers quartering the reeds. Spring and early summer are best for the flowers - ragged robin, devil's-bit scabious, and buttercups in drifts. The paths are well-maintained but proper muddy, so wellies are non-negotiable even a week after rain. Allow an hour for a gentle walk, maybe two if you're stopping to bird-watch properly.

It's not a destination on its own - more of a solid add-on when you're basing yourself near Cambridge. The nearby caravan sites at Cherry Hinton and on Cambridge Camping's grounds put you within walking distance, which beats driving. The meadow lacks the theatrical drama of a big country estate, and families with young kids might find it a bit tame after twenty minutes. But for naturalists and anyone after some proper wetland ecology without the visitor centre crowds, it delivers. Free to visit, no facilities beyond car parking on the adjacent lane.
