Skateraw Dean

The walk down to Skateraw Dean is modest, but the little rocky inlet itself delivers something genuinely atmospheric - especially if you time it right with the light. It's a steep scramble through coastal scrub to reach the shore, where you'll find a tucked-away spot that feels properly removed from the main drag around Dunbar.

This is geology and coastal scenery rather than facilities or crowds. The rock formations are the real draw - weathered cliffs and stone formations that make you understand why the old quarrymen worked here. There's something satisfying about a place that asks you to use your legs and doesn't hand you everything on a postcard.

Walkers and photography types will get the most from it. Children might manage the descent if they're confident on uneven ground, but it's not a destination in itself for a wet Tuesday afternoon. Allow 45 minutes to an hour, depending on how long you linger and whether you're trying to find the optimal angle for shots.

It works well as part of a wider coastal ramble from Dunbar rather than a dedicated stop. The nearest proper base is Belhaven Bay Caravan Park, just four miles away - close enough that you could tack this onto a morning walk without disrupting the day's rhythm. Go when the weather's decent; there's nothing to shelter under, and muddy paths become the enemy on rainy days.
