Site Gallery sits in Sheffield's cultural quarter, occupying a converted industrial space that actually feels like a working studio rather than a hushed white-cube affair. The ground floor shows contemporary art - mostly installations and experimental work from artists you won't have heard of, which is either refreshing or a bit hit-and-miss depending on the season. Upstairs is where things get interesting: it's a proper working printmaking studio, and you can usually watch artists at the presses if you time it right.

It's free to visit, which removes the guilt of popping in for twenty minutes if you're not feeling the current show. Allow an hour if you're genuinely engaged, half that if you're passing through. The real appeal is for anyone curious about how contemporary art actually gets made - families with teenagers often find it more approachable than traditional galleries, and it's certainly a cut above the usual tourist trail stuff.

Timing-wise, Tuesday to Saturday mornings tend to be quieter. Sundays are fine too if you're staying nearby.

If you're camping at Wyming Brook Farm - easily the best-rated option of the three local sites - Site Gallery makes for a solid rainy-day detour during a Peak District break. It's close enough to Sheffield's other museums that you could do the gallery and a proper museum in one afternoon, but frankly, unless you've got specific interest in contemporary printmaking, it's not worth the drive out from the campsites alone. Treat it as a bonus, not a destination.
