Sir John Franklin Statue

You'll find this bronze statue standing near Skegness seafront, a rather modest memorial to one of history's most dramatic Arctic expeditions. Sir John Franklin set out from these shores in 1845 to navigate the Northwest Passage, and it didn't end well - his ships became trapped in ice, and Franklin himself died during the attempt. The statue commemorates both his ambition and the 129 men who perished with him.

It's the kind of place that rewards a bit of historical knowledge. If you're vaguely aware of Franklin's story, you'll appreciate the melancholy of standing here by the coast, knowing what he sailed towards. If you're not, it's just a man on a plinth - atmospheric enough on a grey day, but hardly essential viewing on its own.

History buffs will want to make the pilgrimage, especially since Skegness itself has connections to polar exploration. It's free and takes five minutes to visit, so slot it in while you're at the seafront rather than planning a dedicated trip. Don't expect crowds or interpretation boards - this is proper understated Britain.
