Silveridge Wood

Walking into Silveridge Wood near South Brent, you're immediately struck by how quiet it gets. The trees close in properly - tall stands of oak and pine that block out most of the sky - and within a few minutes of the car park you could be anywhere in England's interior. It's the kind of place where you actually notice birdsong.

The woodland paths are decent and well-marked, winding through thick bracken in summer and opening onto a few small clearings where you can actually see what you're doing. It's not dramatic or vast - more a solid, no-nonsense Devon wood than a destination in its own right. You're looking at an hour to ninety minutes if you take your time, which feels about right before the novelty of walking among the same trees starts to wear thin.

Families with younger kids will probably get the most from it. There's room to let them run ahead without losing sight of them entirely, and the paths don't demand serious fitness. Walkers using it as a leg-stretch between other Dartmoor activities will find it serviceable, though if you're based at South Devon Camping down at Lower Terawhiti Farm, you'd want to pair it with something else - a village, a proper viewpoint, somewhere with actual views.

Free to walk, no facilities that I could see, and honestly it works best on a damp morning when the light filters through the canopy just right. Good for clearing your head rather than impressing anyone.
