Sidbury Castle

The earthworks sprawl across a hillside near Sidmouth with all the understated drama of a defensive position that actually mattered. What you're looking at are the remains of an Iron Age fort - roughly 2,500 years old - where multiple banks and ditches once kept invaders at bay. Walking the perimeter gives you a proper sense of scale; the views across Devon's red cliffs and coastline aren't bad either.

It's the sort of place archaeologists get excited about and most people walk straight past without noticing. That's partly because there's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, no café. You turn up, you see some lumps in the grass, and either you engage your imagination or you don't. History buffs and Iron Age enthusiasts will find it rewarding. Families with young children might manage fifteen minutes before restlessness sets in - it's not dramatic enough to hold attention without context.

Free to visit, no restrictions on access that I'm aware of. Allow an hour if you're genuinely interested in the archaeology; twenty minutes if you just fancy a hillside walk with a view. The site works well as part of a broader Sidmouth day - combine it with a proper seaside amble and maybe fish and chips in town.

Staying at Oakdown or Ladram Bay puts you within easy reach, and Cuckoo Down Farm is close enough for a morning excursion. Best visited on a clear day when those Devon vistas actually show themselves.
