Shreen Meadows & Shires Gate

The paths wind through proper Somerset countryside, where Shreen Meadows opens up into acres of grassland dotted with wildflowers depending on the season. It's the kind of place where you actually spot things - butterflies, birds, the occasional deer if you're quiet enough. The reserve sits near Wincanton, making it a straightforward detour if you're based at Sunnyhill Campsite nearby.

What you get here is genuine walking territory rather than manicured gardens. The meadows themselves are the main draw, with Shires Gate marking a boundary through the landscape. There's no visitor centre or tearoom, which means you need to bring what you need, but that also means it stays peaceful. Allow an hour or two depending on how thoroughly you want to explore the trails.

Families with older kids who can manage a moderate walk will do well here. Younger children might lose interest after 20 minutes - it's not a playground, just genuinely lovely grassland and woodland. Serious walkers and birdwatchers will appreciate the chance to move without crowds.

The best time is late spring through early autumn when the wildflowers are out. Summer can get a bit dry. Winter's fine if you don't mind muddy boots. Free entry, car park usually available, no facilities to speak of. It works nicely as a half-day activity between other Somerset attractions, or as a proper morning walk if you're staying at Sunnyhill - just three miles away.
