Shirley Windmill

The windmill stands on Shirley Common just outside Warlingham, a proper brick tower that's been grinding grain on this spot since 1822. Walk up to it and you're looking at genuine working machinery - the sort of thing that stops you mid-conversation because you can actually see how it all functioned. The sails still turn when the wind's right, and if you time it well, you might catch them in motion.

Inside, it's not a vast museum experience. The space is tight, narrow stairs wind up through the internal mechanisms, and you'll want to give yourself a good hour to poke around properly and let your eyes adjust to the gloom. History enthusiasts and anyone into industrial heritage will absolutely get a kick out of it - the detail work on the millstones and gearing is proper fascinating. Kids tend to find the climb worthwhile, though younger ones might need a hand with some of the steeper bits.

There's no charge to visit and it sits nicely within easy reach of Milberry Green Meadows, which is barely five miles away - worth combining if you're based there for the week. The common itself is decent for a wander beforehand. Summer's best for actually seeing the sails move, but any quiet weekday morning feels less crowded. Ring ahead first though - opening hours aren't fixed, and you'll want to check someone's about before making the journey out from Warlingham.
