Shireoaks Colliery Spoil Heap is essentially what it says - a man-made mountain born from a century of coal mining near Worksop. It's about 150 metres of industrial archaeology, the kind of place that tells you more about the Midlands than any heritage centre could manage.

The climb itself isn't taxing, but the views across Nottinghamshire justify the effort. The nearby caravan parks at Riverside and Clumber Park make decent bases, though honestly you'd probably pair this with a proper park visit rather than make the journey purely for the spoil heap.
