Shipley Glen

Yorkshire's oldest cable tramway still clanks its way up this wooded hillside, offering proper old-fashioned fun that hasn't changed since 1895. The little wooden carriages haul you up through the trees to moorland views that stretch across the Aire Valley and beyond to the Pennines on a clear day.

Families with young children absolutely love this place - there's something magical about the slow, gentle climb that keeps even the most restless kids glued to the windows. The tramway runs most weekends and school holidays, weather permitting, though it's worth checking before you travel as high winds can shut it down.

Once at the top, Shipley Glen itself is a lovely spot for a wander. The heather moorland spreads out in all directions, crisscrossed with footpaths that range from gentle strolls to proper hill walks. Views from up here take in Baildon Moor and on clear days you can spot the towers of distant Bradford.

It's a short hop from several holiday parks including Crook Farm Park and Dobrudden Caravan Park, making it an easy day out. The whole experience - tramway ride up, bit of fresh air at the top, then back down again - takes about an hour unless you fancy a longer walk. Proper slice of Victorian engineering that still delivers the goods more than a century later.
