Shilstone Tor

The walk up Shilstone Tor rewards you with proper moorland views and a real sense of being somewhere wild, even though Exeter's only a short drive away. It's not a difficult climb - more of a steady tramp through rough grass and heather - and the tor itself is a decent scramble if you fancy it, though nothing technical.

The summit gives you wide-open vistas across Dartmoor in one direction and back towards civilisation in the other. On a clear day it's genuinely worth the effort. You'll spot other walkers, but it never feels rammed, which is refreshing compared to some of the better-known Dartmoor spots.

It's ideal for anyone who wants a proper moorland walk without committing to a full day expedition. Families with reasonably fit kids will manage it fine - the path's clear enough and the scramble adds a bit of excitement. Give yourself a couple of hours including the summit dawdle and photo stops.

Parking's a bit rough - you're looking at roadside spots near the base - but that's typical for this part of Dartmoor. Head early if you're going at weekends, though it rarely gets properly busy.

If you're staying at Woodland Springs or Barley Meadow for a park holiday, this makes a cracking half-day outing that breaks up the usual pool and entertainment schedule. Bring a decent map though - the approach paths aren't always obvious on the ground.
