Sherborne Old Castle English Heritage

The ruins sprawl across a hillside just outside Sturminster Newton like broken teeth. History buffs will find themselves reconstructing siege tactics. Kids under ten will likely get restless unless they're the type to clamber on walls, which they absolutely can do here.

There's no visitor centre, no café, no gift shop - just a castle doing what it's been doing for four centuries since it got wrecked. The admission is free, which feels about right for a ruin. Go when the ground isn't waterlogged if you can manage it; these earthworks get boggy in winter.
