The ground floor of Sherborne Museum is where most people spend their time, and honestly, it's the right call. You'll find the expected local history - Roman finds, medieval bits, the sort of thing - but what strikes you is how well it's all arranged. Someone clearly cares about making sense of it rather than just cramming everything in. The upper floors cover the Sherborne school and local figures, which is fine if you're into that sort of genealogy rabbit hole, but the real draw is understanding how this corner of Dorset actually worked.

It's free to get in, which removes any pressure to linger if you're not feeling it. Most visitors spend 45 minutes to an hour here before moving on. Come between April and December, Tuesday to Saturday - they're closed Sundays and Mondays, which always catches people out. Being so close to Sturminster Newton, you could easily pair this with a stroll around town or pick up lunch before heading back to Starlight Glamping, which sits just a few miles away and offers proper accommodation if you're basing yourself in the area.

Historically minded adults will get more from it than young children. The museum's quiet and a bit old-fashioned in the best way - no interactive screens or gimmicks, just cases and explanation panels. That appeals to some people and bores others entirely. If you're already in Dorset for a week, it's worth an hour. If you're driving past, maybe worth stopping for. Don't go out of your way specially.
