You won't find theme park rides or manicured gardens here. Instead, you get the chance to meet dogs of all shapes and temperaments, many with proper stories behind them, and help out if you're keen.

It's genuinely brilliant for families with older kids who actually care about animals rather than just wanting to pose for Instagram. Younger children might find the experience a bit overwhelming - not all the dogs are used to chaos, and that's fair enough. Dog-owning families will get the most out of a visit, obviously, but anyone with a soft spot for rescue animals will find it rewarding.

The retreat works on trust - it's run by volunteers and the whole operation hinges on people respecting the dogs' space and following instructions.
