Shelley Park

This nature reserve sits on the edge of Christchurch and feels like proper countryside despite being minutes from town. It's a working landscape rather than a manicured attraction - you'll find wetland habitats, grazing marshes, and woodland that actually matter to wildlife rather than just looking nice for visitors.

You wander around on a network of footpaths that loop through different habitats. Birdwatchers come here regularly because the wetlands pull in all sorts - waders, wildfowl, the lot. If ornithology means nothing to you, it's still a pleasant walk with decent views across the marshes, though I'll be honest: it's more functional than scenic. Bring binoculars if you're into that sort of thing.

The reserve works best for people who actually want to observe nature rather than snap Instagram photos. Families with older kids will get something from it; younger ones might find it a bit dull after half an hour. The paths are flat and easy, so no scrambling required.

If you're based at Sandhills Holiday Park or Hoburne Park Holiday Park nearby, Shelley Park makes a decent half-morning walk without needing to travel far. Don't expect facilities or admission fees - it's essentially open access conservation land. Allow an hour or so to do the main loops. Go early if birdwatching appeals; you'll have a better chance of spotting things before the day gets too warm and busy.
