The roar of speedway bikes hitting the track is something you either love or find utterly bewildering. Sheffield Speedway is proper motorsport - think motorcycle racing at breakneck speeds on a shale surface, drivers leaning so far into corners they're practically horizontal. It's held at Owlerton Stadium, and if you've never been to a live speedway meeting, it's worth experiencing at least once.

You'll spend roughly two to three hours watching heats of racing, each one lasting just a few minutes but absolutely intense. The atmosphere is electric - genuine fans who know every rider's history, local rivalries that run deep, and a real sense of community around Sheffield's team. Families come regularly, though younger children might struggle with the noise and lack of action between races.

It's free to walk around the grounds on non-event days, though I'd confirm current opening hours before you turn up, as schedules vary. Race days require admission, which is reasonable value given what you're getting. Summer is your best bet for fixtures.

If you're camping in the area - Fox Hagg Farm Campsite is under four miles away, or Wyming Brook Farm if you want somewhere with top ratings - speedway offers something genuinely different from the Peak District walks and country pubs you'll likely be doing otherwise. It's not for everyone, but if you've got any interest in motorsport at all, it's worth the short drive from Sheffield.
