Sheffield Cathedral

The cathedral sits bang in the heart of Sheffield city centre, a Grade I listed building that's been doing its job since medieval times - though what you see today is largely Victorian rebuild work. It's small by cathedral standards, which is rather refreshing. You can wander inside to take in the soaring ceilings, the stained glass, and grab a proper look at the craftsmanship without feeling like you need a packed lunch and a hiking boot to get around the place.

It works well for anyone with a passing interest in religious architecture or local history. History buffs will appreciate the layered story - from its 15th-century origins through to the major restoration work that's kept it standing. Kids might find it a bit quiet and contemplative unless you're the sort to set them a spotting challenge (arches, gargoyles, that sort of thing).

Admission is free, which is worth knowing. You can slip in for twenty minutes between other city activities or dedicate an hour if you want to sit quietly and soak it in.
