Sheffield Botanical Gardens

The gardens sprawl across 19 acres in the southwest of Sheffield, and they're genuinely one of the city's best-kept secrets. You get Victorian glasshouses, a proper rock garden, a alpine house, and enough themed spaces to keep you occupied for a solid afternoon without feeling rushed.

Walkers will appreciate the sloped terrain - it's a workout getting from the lower sections up to the higher parts, but the payoff is decent views across the city. Families with young kids find it manageable; there's enough open space for them to run about, though it's not a playground setup. The glasshouses are brilliant in winter when the Yorkshire weather turns grim - you can spend an hour wandering through tropical plants and actually feel warm for once.

Historically minded types will get a kick out of the Victorian architecture and the fact it's been running since 1836. The plant collections are genuinely impressive if you're into horticulture, with everything from rare cacti to native wildflowers depending on the season.

If you're based at Fox Hagg Farm or Wyming Brook Farm campsites nearby, it's an easy drive in. Admission appears to be free, which is proper value for money given how well-maintained everything is. Best to visit in spring or early summer when things are actually flowering rather than dormant. Allow two to three hours if you're thorough, less if you're just after a stroll. It's not going to blow your mind, but it's exactly what a city botanical garden should be.
