Shedding Shank

The walk up Shedding Shank rewards you with sweeping views across Northumberland's rolling moorland - the sort of landscape that reminds you why people get addicted to the Pennines. It's a proper fell, not some gentle riverside stroll, and you'll feel the climb in your legs by the top.

The peak itself isn't dramatic or sharp - more of a broad moorland shoulder - but that's almost better. You get uninterrupted views without any faffing about on exposed edges. On a clear day you can pick out the Cheviot chain and the valleys dropping away towards Hexham. The approach from below is straightforward enough for reasonably fit walkers, though the ground underfoot can be boggy in places, so proper boots are non-negotiable.

Walkers will get real value here, especially those already exploring the wider Kielder area. The walk suits a half-day outing rather than a committed expedition - give it two to three hours return depending on your pace. Families with older kids who don't mind a bit of a trudge will manage fine, but toddlers will find it a slog.

If you're based at Kielder Waterside or Landal Kielder Waterside - both within five miles - this slots nicely into a park holiday. You get the high moorland experience without needing to venture into the Scottish borders, and it breaks up a week of watersports and lakeside lounging. Ascend early if you want to avoid the afternoon cloud that tends to roll in.
