Shawbury Wood

It's a mixed forest with decent walking trails that wind through beech, oak and pine, the sort of place where the light filters through the canopy in that golden way that makes you forget you're only a few miles from the town.

The woodland works best for walkers and families wanting a straightforward stroll rather than a major expedition. You get good tree coverage so it's decent even in drizzle, and the paths are manageable for kids old enough to walk without constant carrying. Allow ninety minutes to two hours if you want to do a proper circuit without rushing. Spring brings bluebells which are worth timing a visit for, but honestly the place is pleasant enough year-round.

It's free to walk, no facilities to speak of so come prepared. There's a decent loop trail but the navigational signage could be better - brings a map or download a route beforehand. Shawbury Wood pairs well with Nightingales Rustic Camping just a few miles away if you're building a woodland-focused break around Atherstone. The camping spot is solid, and having a forest walk on your doorstep makes sense.

Worth a visit if you're in the area and want something genuine rather than managed, but don't expect interpretive boards or a visitor centre. This is just wood, trees and quiet - which is precisely what some people come for.
