Shaw Ridge Linear Park

A long strip of green running through Swindon's outer reaches, Shaw Ridge Linear Park is the kind of place locals know and visitors stumble upon by accident. It's a converted railway line - the old trackbed turned into a proper walking and cycling route that stretches for a few miles, giving you actual countryside feel without leaving the town limits.

You get decent views across fields and woodland as you walk or cycle. It's flat, easy to navigate, and genuinely quite pleasant for a stretch of the legs. The main appeal is the peace of it - especially if you're staying at Park Farm Campsite just down the road. No monuments, no visitor centre, no admission charge because it's essentially a public right of way that's been tidied up. Allow an hour or two depending on how far you fancy going.

Families with kids on bikes will get decent mileage out of this. Serious walkers might find it a bit too straightforward, but it's brilliant for a gentle morning stroll before heading into Swindon proper or exploring the wider countryside. The route is well-maintained and popular with dog walkers, which tells you it's worth the visit. Spring and summer are best - winter can feel a bit bleak and exposed in places.

It's the sort of thing that makes sense as part of a longer park holiday rather than a destination in itself, but it saves you driving somewhere more famous when you just want a quick walk and some fresh air.
