Sharlston Colliery Memorial

The memorial stands in Sharlston, a former mining village just outside Wakefield, marking one of Yorkshire's most tragic industrial moments. In 1893, an explosion at the colliery killed 139 men and boys - some accounts put the toll even higher. It's a sobering place to spend twenty minutes, reading the names etched into stone and understanding what drove entire communities.

There's not much to "do" here in the tourist sense. You walk around the memorial, absorb the weight of it, and move on. But that's rather the point. It's genuinely moving without being maudlin, and the memorial itself has been well-maintained. The nearest town, Wakefield, has proper museums if you want fuller context about Yorkshire's mining heritage, but this spot - quiet, local, real - hits differently.

History enthusiasts will find it worthwhile, particularly anyone researching industrial Britain or family genealogy. It won't eat much time, which makes it an easy addition to a park-based holiday in the area. Nostell Priory Holiday Park sits barely a mile away, and the Priory itself has far more to occupy a day trip. Broadlands Farm, a five-minute drive further out, offers decent facilities if you're basing yourselves in the region.

Go on a weekday morning if you can. The silence matters here. It's not the sort of place you'd return to twice, but it's the sort you'd be glad you visited once.
