Shard End Lake

Shard End Lake sits on the eastern edge of Coventry, a proper working-class corner of the West Midlands that doesn't pretend to be anything it's not. This is a local fishing lake, ringed by willows and reedy banks where you'll actually see people catching things rather than posing for Instagram. The water's calm, the surrounding grassland is open and free, and on a decent day it's the sort of place where an afternoon disappears without you noticing.

It's not dramatic or particularly picturesque - don't come expecting windswept moorland or postcard views. What you get instead is honest, accessible countryside within spitting distance of Coventry's suburbs. Anglers will love it; they come for carp and pike and know the water well. Walkers treating it as a circuit rather than a destination will find the paths easy underfoot. Families with younger kids might get an hour's entertainment, maybe less if the fishing action's slow and there's nothing to throw at.

There's no visitor infrastructure to speak of - bring your own supplies and expect to park on the road. It's free to walk around, though fishing permits apply if you want to cast a line. The real value is how it breaks up a caravan holiday at Somers Wood, five miles south near Kenilworth. You won't drive across the country for this lake alone, but as a morning's diversion when you're already in the area, it works. Especially on weekdays when the place is quieter and you've got the banks largely to yourself.
