Just outside Street in Somerset, this National Nature Reserve sprawls across wetland that feels properly remote despite being minutes from civilization. You're walking through reed beds and open water where bitterns boom in spring and marsh harriers quarter the skies - if you time it right, the birdwatching alone justifies the trip.

The reserve itself is free to access, though you'll want to allow a good hour minimum for even a basic circuit. The paths are flat and easy, which means families can manage it without complaints, though toddlers might get restless if there's no wildlife about. Serious twitchers will want binoculars and a field guide; casual walkers will find it pleasant enough, though it's not the sort of dramatic landscape that photographs brilliantly.

Mid-morning visits tend to be quieter, and the light's usually better then too. Spring and early summer are peak seasons - the whole place comes alive with breeding birds and insects. Winter's another option if you're keen on seeing overwintering species and don't mind the squelch.
