Shan Slieve

Standing at 627 metres, this rounded summit in the Mourne Mountains delivers proper mountain views without the technical scrambling that puts off casual walkers. The path up from Tollymore Forest Park is well-trodden and manageable for anyone with decent fitness, though it's still a proper climb that'll get the heart pumping.

From the top, you'll see why the Mournes have such a reputation. The granite peaks roll away in every direction, with Slieve Donard dominating the skyline to the east. On clear days, the Irish Sea stretches endlessly beyond Newcastle, while the lowlands of County Down spread out below like a patchwork quilt.

Families with older children will find this a cracking introduction to proper mountain walking. The route takes about three hours return from Tollymore, making it ideal for a morning hike before settling into one of the nearby holiday parks. Tollymore Campsite and Camping Tollymore Forest Park are both within walking distance of the trailhead.

Weather changes fast up here, so pack layers even on sunny days. Early morning starts reward you with better visibility and fewer crowds, though the summit can be lovely at sunset too if you don't mind the walk down in gathering dusk.
