Shambles Market

The narrow cobbled street squeezes between timber-framed buildings that lean inward as if gossiping across the centuries. This is Shambles Market in York - and yes, it's absolutely as medieval as the postcards suggest, but don't let that put you off.

The street itself is the attraction. Once a butchers' row (hence the name - a shamble was a meat stall), it's now lined with independent shops, cafes, and the sort of places that sell fudge by the pound. The buildings genuinely date back to the 1350s. Wonky floors, low doorways, windows you'd struggle to fit a decent pane of glass in - it's all properly preserved rather than Disney-fied.

Worth half an hour of wandering. An hour if you're shopping or stopping for coffee. The crowds can be thick, especially weekends and school holidays, so get there early or go on a grey Tuesday afternoon when it feels almost like stepping back in time rather than shuffling through a gift shop queue.

Families with younger kids often find it engaging enough - the scale is intimate and there's usually something to look at - but it's not a destination in itself. Pair it with York Minster across the road and a walk of the city walls, and you've got a proper morning. The nearby caravan parks at Nurseries (3.1 miles) and Wagtail (3.4 miles) make decent bases if you're staying longer.
