Shakespeare Beach

The pebbles stretch out grey and relentless along this stretch of Kent coastline, with the White Cliffs rising dramatically behind. Shakespeare Beach - named after the playwright, though the connection is more romantic than historical - sits just outside Dover and offers proper seaside drama without the pier and amusement arcades.

There's not much to do here in the traditional sense. You walk, you look at the cliffs, you pick through the shale. The appeal is raw and straightforward: it's a working beach with fishing boats, a blustery wind, and views across the Channel that remind you how close France actually is. Low tide reveals more of the foreshore, but the shingle is steep and unforgiving underfoot.

Walkers get the most from this spot. The coastal path threading along here connects to other stretches and the cliffs themselves draw photographers and geology enthusiasts. Families with young children might find it less engaging than a sandy beach - the pebbles get old fast and there's nowhere to shelter. It's free, naturally, and you can spend twenty minutes or two hours depending on your mood.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - St Margaret's Bay Holiday Park is closest at 3.4 miles - it's worth a morning walk without planning your day around it. Pair it with Dover itself or a visit to the actual White Cliffs visitor centre a few miles west. The beach works best on a clear day when you can actually see something. Come for the walk, not the destination.
