Sgwd Yr Eira

Walk behind a waterfall - properly behind it, not just past it - and you'll understand why Sgwd Yr Eira draws visitors in droves to this corner of Powys. The Welsh name means "Waterfall of Snow", and once you're beneath the cascade with water thundering past just metres away, you'll see why. The walk from Neath takes you through the Afan Forest Park, following a stream that gets progressively more dramatic until you round a bend and there it is - a solid curtain of water you can actually step behind. The cavern behind the falls is surprisingly spacious and genuinely thrilling, especially if you time it right and catch the light hitting the water just so. It's not a long hike, maybe forty minutes or so from the carpark, but it's steep enough that you'll feel it in your legs on the way back up. The path can be slippery year-round, treacherous after heavy rain. Summer's your best bet for manageable conditions and crowds that won't feel utterly suffocating. Families with older kids will manage fine; toddlers will struggle. History buffs get nothing here - it's pure landscape appeal.
