The walk up Sgurr Finnisg-aig near Fort William is steep and proper demanding, but the payoff is worth every burning calf muscle. You're climbing to a viewpoint that commands the entire Glen Coe valley - the dramatic peaks rise up all around you like a natural cathedral, and on a clear day you can see right across to the coast.

It's not a casual stroll. Most people allow two to three hours for the round trip, and you'll need proper boots and a decent level of fitness. The path is rough in places and the final push to the summit tests your resolve, but that's exactly why it doesn't get rammed with tourists. You'll share the ridge with serious walkers and the occasional fell runner, not coach parties.

Historians will appreciate the Jacobite connections scattered through the Highlands here - this landscape shaped Scotland's story. Families with older kids who enjoy a proper challenge will find it rewarding, though younger ones might struggle with the exposure on the final section. Go early morning if you can, before the cloud rolls in off the Atlantic.

Both Ben Nevis Holiday Park and Glen Nevis Caravan & Camping Park make excellent bases. Glen Nevis rates highly for good reason - the facilities are proper, and you're only 4.6 miles away. Use either as your starting point and factor in a full day. It's free to climb, naturally, but the reward isn't a café or gift shop at the top - it's the silence and the view.
