Sgribhis-bheinn

Getting to Sgribhis-bheinn means driving out to Durness, that properly remote corner of Sutherland where the road runs out and the landscape turns almost lunar. It's a modest peak by Highland standards, but the walk up rewards you with views across to Cape Wrath and the Minch beyond - the kind of stark, windswept vistas that stick with you long after you're back in civilization.

The climb itself isn't brutal. You're looking at maybe two hours up, depending on your pace and fitness, with the path reasonably clear if a bit boggy in places. Walkers will get the most from this one - it's not the sort of place you take toddlers, but determined hikers with decent boots will find it genuinely worthwhile. The summit cairn sits at just over 1,000 metres, high enough to feel like an achievement without requiring technical gear or previous mountaineering experience.

Don't expect crowds. This is the far northwest, where mobile signal drops out and you realise how isolated the Scottish coast can feel. Bring proper waterproofs - the weather turns fast up here, and there's nowhere to shelter once you're above the heather. Go when the light's good: long days in summer mean you can dawdle at the top without worrying about darkness creeping in too early.

Sango Sands Oasis is your best bet for a base - just under six miles away, with proper facilities if you want to park up for a few days and explore the area. The coast around Durness itself is worth time too.
