Severs' Plantation

The woodland around Severs' Plantation near Northallerton is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for, and that's rather the point. It's a proper forest walk - dense trees, decent paths, the kind of spot where you can actually lose the sound of traffic for a bit. The plantation itself dates back generations, and you can feel that age in the canopy.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a manicured country estate with gift shops and tea rooms. Instead you've got genuine woodland, room to breathe, space to let the kids run about without worrying about crowds. The paths are manageable enough, though parts can be muddy depending on the season. Allow a couple of hours if you want to properly explore rather than just cut through.

It works well if you're staying at Whorlton Pods, only six miles away - perfect for an afternoon when you want to get outside but aren't up for a full fell walk. The North Yorkshire landscape around Northallerton has plenty of other bits to explore too, so it slots nicely into a wider area visit.

Best in spring when the woodland floor comes alive, or autumn if you're after that golden light. Summer can be airless under all that canopy. Go early on weekends to avoid the dog walkers.
