Severn Valley Railway - Kidderminster station

The platform at Kidderminster station is where proper railway nostalgia comes alive. This is the base for the Severn Valley Railway - a fully operational heritage line that runs vintage steam and diesel trains through 16 miles of stunning Worcestershire countryside towards Bridgnorth. You step aboard lovingly restored carriages that actually belonged to the railways of the 1950s and 60s, and for two hours you're rattling through valleys with genuine telegraph poles and railway cottages sliding past the windows.

It's brilliant for families who've got kids old enough to sit still for a journey - say five and up - though the novelty wears thin if your lot expect Wi-Fi and snacks every ten minutes. Adults who remember proper train travel, or just enjoy industrial heritage, will get far more from it. The journey itself is the draw rather than any dramatic destination - Bridgnorth station at the far end is pleasant but hardly a day-long activity on its own.

Given Kidderminster's proximity to several caravan parks - Wolverley's closest at under two miles, with Lickhill Manor and Walshes Farm both under four miles away - it works well as a half-day outing if you're based locally. Book ahead during school holidays; it does get rammed. Admission isn't free, but a return journey costs roughly what you'd spend on a decent pub lunch, and frankly the whole thing feels worth it. Go on a clear day if possible - the views really are the whole point.
