Severn Valley Railway - Bridgnorth Station

Steam billows across the platform and suddenly you're back in 1950s Britain. Bridgnorth Station is the beating heart of the Severn Valley Railway, and it's genuinely one of those places that works whether you're train-obsessed or simply after a proper day out.

The restored Victorian station itself is worth lingering over - original ironwork, period signage, the sort of details that make heritage railways tick. But the real draw is the journey itself. You board a vintage steam locomotive that hauls you south along twelve miles of track, winding through the Shropshire countryside alongside the River Severn. Stops at Bewdley and Kidderminster break up the route, so you can hop off and poke around other stations. The whole return trip takes about two and a half hours, which is spot-on for families with younger kids.

It's not free - expect to pay a fair whack for tickets - but it's a day out rather than a quick visit. The railway runs weekends year-round, with more frequent services in summer. Spring and autumn offer the best light, honestly.

For caravan holidaymakers based at nearby Stanmore Hall or Hay & Hedgerow, this fills a rainy-day gap nicely, though you'll want decent weather for the open-air observation car. Heritage rail enthusiasts will find endless rabbit holes - the workshops and museum sections reveal proper engineering.
