Sedbury Park

The River Swale cuts through Sedbury Park like a ribbon of dark water, and you're immediately struck by how quiet it is here - proper rural Yorkshire, just a few miles south of Richmond. This nature reserve spreads across riverside meadows and woodland, and it's the kind of place where you actually see things: kingfishers if you're lucky, roe deer picking their way through the trees, and enough birds to keep binoculars trained all morning.

It's a walker's spot rather than a destination for sitting about. The paths wind through mixed woodland and alongside the river, offering decent vantage points without being demanding. You're looking at a couple of hours maximum unless you're serious about spotting rare species, in which case you'll want to linger. Families with younger kids might find it a touch monotonous - there's no visitor centre or facilities, and it's very much a case of following footpaths through trees and fields.

What works brilliantly is combining this with a base at Hewn Yorkshire, just four miles away. The glamping setup there means you can do a proper morning walk here before heading back for coffee, or tackle it as an afternoon wander when the light's better on the water. Spring and early summer are best - nesting season means more activity, and the meadows are actually worth looking at rather than just trudging past brown grass.
