Secret Wartime Tunnels

Dover's wartime tunnels run 80 metres beneath the white cliffs, and walking through them feels properly eerie even now. You're literally underground in the same rooms where soldiers sheltered during the Blitz, where operations were coordinated, where history happened in the dark. The tunnels are genuinely claustrophobic in places - low ceilings, narrow passages - which makes the experience feel authentic rather than sanitised.

You'll see the operations rooms, sleeping quarters, and original fixtures left more or less as they were. It's the small details that land hardest: the camp beds, the communication equipment, the realisation that people spent weeks down here. History types will find it riveting. Kids often get the most from it too, truth be told - there's something about underground spaces that grabs their imagination, and the Second World War connection usually hooks them.

Allow a good hour, possibly ninety minutes if you're reading everything. The tunnels aren't massive, so it's not an all-day thing, but it pairs well with Dover Castle and the town's seafront if you're basing yourself at one of the nearby parks like Parkdean Resorts or Hawthorn Farm. The Kingsdown Camping site, five miles away, is also handy if you want something cheaper and more low-key.

Dover itself is a working port town - nothing fancy, but genuinely interesting. The tunnels are the standout attraction down here, worth the trip if wartime history grabs you at all.
