The National Railway Museum's research archive sits quietly in York, tucked away from the main exhibition halls. It's where the real railway obsessives go - filing cabinets stuffed with photographs, engineering drawings, timetables dating back to the Victorian era, and personal accounts from people who actually worked the railways. You're not wandering around looking at gleaming locomotives here; you're hunched over a desk with a pair of white gloves, pulling documents that few people ever bother to search for.

This is absolutely brilliant if you're serious about railway history - whether you're researching your great-grandfather's career as a signalman or tracking down specifics about a particular line or engine. The staff know their stuff and actually seem pleased when someone walks in with a proper question rather than expecting to see Thomas the Tank Engine. Casual visitors who think they'll pop in for twenty minutes will quickly realise it's not for them; you need a genuine project or a deep interest to make it worthwhile.

You'll need to book ahead - it's not a drop-in sort of place. Thursdays to Saturdays, 10am to 4:30pm. Admission appears to be free, though donations are welcome. It pairs naturally with a broader York trip; the main museum itself is worth a full day, and Wagtail Park just outside the city makes a decent base if you're staying a few nights. Allow at least two hours if you know what you're after, longer if you're just browsing the catalogues.
