Seafront Park

Walk out onto Seafront Park from Clacton-on-Sea and you're in proper Essex coastal territory - salt marshes, mudflats, and that particular kind of windswept beauty that only works if you're into nature reserves. This is a working landscape, not a manicured park. You'll see wading birds, especially in winter when the reserves fill with migrating species. Bring binoculars if you're a serious birdwatcher; leave them at home if you're after Instagram moments.

The appeal here is straightforward: it's free access to a genuinely interesting bit of Essex coastline that most tourists skip past on their way to Southend. The walk along the seafront takes maybe an hour depending on your pace and how often you stop to look at things. Low tide reveals more of the mudflats, which is when the birds come in. High tide? Less to see unless you like watching water. Parents with young kids might find it a bit limited - there's no playground infrastructure - but older children who can manage a decent walk and don't need constant entertainment will get something out of spotting wildlife.

You're well positioned if you're staying at Parkdean's Valley Farm or Highfield Grange, both under two miles away. Even St Osyth Beach Holiday Park, nearly three miles out, makes this an easy morning outing before heading to the beach proper. Go early to avoid the handful of other visitors, and definitely check tide times before you go - they make an actual difference to what you'll see.
