Scoolary, Broch site

The stones stand alone on moorland north of Thurso, rising from turf like they've been waiting three millennia for someone to care. Scoolary is a broch - one of Scotland's Iron Age towers - and what you're looking at is roughly 2,000 years of erosion rendered in collapsed walls and shadowed chambers. The outer ring is traceable if you're willing to squelch through boggy ground. The inner structure, less so.

This isn't a polished heritage site with interpretation boards and a visitor centre. You need archaeological knowhow or serious imagination to extract meaning from the rubble. If you're already deep into Iron Age Scotland or doing a systematic tour of Caithness brochs, it's worth the detour. Walking up from Thurso takes forty minutes or so depending on how lost you get in the landscape. The journey out across open moorland is genuinely rewarding - rolling hills, wind, space - but the broch itself rewards patience more than casual interest.

Family groups might find it thin on engagement after ten minutes unless the kids are genuinely keen on ancient fortifications. Walkers, though, will find it sits nicely within a wider exploration of the far north. You're a short drive from Little Croft Highlands campsite, which makes this the sort of stop you build into a longer Caithness ramble rather than a destination in itself. Weather matters more than at most sites - come on a clear day and you'll appreciate the isolation; come in Highland drizzle and it's purely functional archaeology.
