Scarfskerry, Broch site

A few crumbling stones on a windswept Caithness headland might not sound like much, but Scarfskerry broch is genuinely worth the short drive north from Thurso if you're into Iron Age ruins. What you're looking at are the remains of a Scottish broch - a distinctive circular stone tower that would've stood maybe forty feet tall around 2,000 years ago. The walls are properly eroded now, but you can still make out the defensive layout and get a real sense of how these structures dominated the landscape.

The site itself sits right on the coast, which is the thing that makes it special. The walk up takes maybe ten minutes from the nearest parking spot, and the views across the Pentland Firth towards Orkney are genuinely excellent, even on a grey day. History buffs will spend a solid half-hour picking over the stonework and trying to imagine what life was like for the people living here, but if your kids are expecting towers to climb, you'll disappoint them - it's all ground level and fairly exposed.

It's free to visit and accessible more or less year-round, though the weather can be brutal. If you're staying at Little Croft Highlands just down the road, it's an easy morning outing that breaks up a camping trip without needing to plan around opening hours. Don't expect a visitor centre or interpretation boards - just you, ancient stones, and the wind.
