Sarratt Bottom nature reserve

The walk down into Sarratt Bottom is what makes this place. You descend through beech woodland that properly closes in around you, the path narrowing as the gradient steepens, and suddenly the whole valley opens up below - chalk grassland, scrub, the works. It's a nature reserve run by the Hertfordshire and Middlesex Wildlife Trust, and it feels genuinely wild for somewhere so close to Rickmansworth.

What you're seeing here is old chalk workings turned into something rather special. The grassland attracts adders and slow worms - spot them if you're lucky, though they're shy. Butterflies do well here too, especially in summer. Walkers will find the terrain manageable but the slope going back up will test your calves a bit. Allow a solid hour and a half to poke around properly without rushing.

It's the sort of place that rewards curiosity rather than delivering obvious spectacle. You won't find a visitor centre or a cafe, and there's no charge for entry. That's rather the point. If you're staying at Fuzzy's Farm nearby, this makes a cracking half-day walk. The reserve fills a gap between a proper countryside ramble and a quick nature trail - substantial enough to feel like you've done something, intimate enough that you won't feel hemmed in.

Go in late spring or early summer when the grassland's alive. Winter works too if you like mud and silence. Weekday mornings tend to be quieter than weekends.
