Sapperton Valley

The Sapperton Valley cuts through the Cotswolds like something from a watercolour painting, though without the saccharine overtones that usually come with that comparison. This is proper countryside - steep wooded slopes, a working canal threading through the bottom, and enough quietness to remind you why you left the city. The valley's main draw is the canal walk itself. You can cover a couple of miles quite easily, following the towpath from Sapperton village down towards Daneway, where the canal disappears into a tunnel that's been there since 1789. Kids find the engineering satisfying; adults appreciate the walk without the crowds you'd get at better-known stretches of the Thames or Severn. The village of Sapperton sits at the top - modest but worth a poke around - and there's a decent pub if you've worked up an appetite. Stroud's only three miles away, so you can combine this with the market town's independent shops and cafes if you want something with more energy. Allow a couple of hours for the valley itself. It's not a destination that'll eat up a full day, but it's the sort of place that justifies an afternoon wandering. Spring and early summer are best - the woods are thick enough to keep things cool, and you won't be fighting for space on the path. If you're staying at Mayfield Park nearby, it's well worth the short drive. The whole area rewards slow exploration rather than ticking boxes.
