Sane Copse

A proper woodland walk rather than a destination in itself, Sane Copse offers what you'd expect from a Northamptonshire forest - mature trees, quiet paths, and the sort of place where you can actually hear birds instead of traffic. It's the kind of spot locals know about but tourists rarely find, which is exactly the point.

The wood itself isn't large, so don't plan a full day around it. An hour's wander is plenty, following the footpaths between the oaks and beeches. There's nothing dramatic here - no waterfall, no viewpoint, no ancient monument - just the straightforward pleasure of being among trees. Families with young kids might find it a bit lacking in wow factor after twenty minutes, but serious walkers and anyone after a genuine bit of peace will appreciate it.

Free to access, open whenever you fancy turning up. Spring's the best time, when the bluebells come through and the canopy's still light enough to see properly. Summer gets muggy and the paths can be hard going in places.

If you're staying at one of the caravan parks clustered around Billing Aquadrome or Grendon Lakes just outside Northampton, Sane Copse makes a convenient morning walk before heading elsewhere. It's not a reason to choose the area, but it slots nicely into a longer ramble. The town itself is five miles south - perfectly decent for supplies and lunch, but there's not much else woodland-wise that would compete with this.
