Sandpits Down

The walk up Sandpits Down rewards you with genuine views across Hampshire's rolling chalk downland - the sort of landscape that makes you understand why people bother with hiking in the first place. It's not dramatic, but it's proper English countryside at its best, and the summit gives you a real sense of height without requiring mountaineering skills.

You're looking at an hour's walk from the nearest car access, depending on fitness and how often you stop to breathe. The terrain is mostly grassland, occasionally muddy after rain, and the paths are well-trodden enough that you won't get lost. Families with older kids will manage it fine; very young children might flag towards the end. The views improve the higher you go, so don't cut it short.

There's no visitor infrastructure at all - no café, no facilities, nothing. Bring water and pack a decent picnic if you want to linger at the top. The nearest town is Newbury, which gives you somewhere to grab supplies beforehand.

It works well as part of a broader walking loop around the area rather than a destination in itself. Best visited spring through early autumn when the downland flowers and the chalk paths dry out.
