Sandbanks Beach

The sand here is genuinely golden - proper fine stuff that squeaks between your toes and doesn't stick to everything like it does on most British beaches. Sandbanks, just outside Swanage, is one of those places that actually lives up to the hype, though you'll want to time your visit carefully if you value anything resembling peace.

It's a long, wide sweep of beach backed by the kind of expensive villas that make you wonder who has that much money. The water's clean enough for swimming most days, the sand shelves gradually so it's safe for younger kids, and at low tide you get a proper expanse to spread out on. The beach huts are iconic if you're after that quintessential seaside snap.

Walkers should know the coastal path here is solid - you can head along toward Old Harry Rocks for views that actually justify the leg work. The whole stretch between Swanage and Sandbanks is walkable and worth doing on a decent day.

Timing matters. Summer weekends are rammed with families and day-trippers. June or September mornings are infinitely better - you might actually get a spot without navigating three hundred umbrellas. Parking's paid and can be steep during peak season, so factor that in.

If you're camping at Swanage Bay View or Ulwell Holiday Park nearby, it's an easy drive or bike ride. For families wanting straightforward beach time without the faffing about, this delivers. Just don't expect solitude in July.
