Sand Pot

You'll find Sand Pot tucked into the limestone hills near Kirkby Stephen, a proper Yorkshire Dales cave that's more intimate than showy. It's not one of those vast cathedral caverns - this is a tight, accessible hole in the ground where you can actually see how water carved the passage over millennia. The entrance opens onto a short walk through chambers where the rock formations feel almost sculpted. Light filters in from above in places, catching the pale stone in quite lovely ways.

This works best for families with older kids or anyone who fancies a bit of mild adventure without needing caving gear. You're not crawling through mud or squeezing through gaps - it's manageable for reasonably fit adults and teenagers. Allow an hour to poke around without rushing. Winter's good if you want the place quieter, though it'll be colder underground.

It slots nicely into a wider Dales trip. Kirkby Stephen itself has decent pubs and shops, and the area's riddled with other walks and caves if you're into that sort of thing. If you're staying at Gillcumber Glamping Pods just down the road, this is an easy half-day outing before heading back to the fire pit. Worth the detour if you're already in the region, though don't bank a whole trip around it alone. The cave's worth maybe forty minutes of your time, not a full afternoon.
