Salisbury Watermeadows

The Watermeadows stretch out from central Salisbury like the town's own secret breathing space. It's a ribbon of green running alongside the river - proper flat walking terrain where locals actually go rather than tourists queuing at the cathedral. You'll find water channels threading through open pasture, willows drooping into the Avon, and if you time it right, the light hits the water in that golden way that makes you understand why people bother with landscape painting.

This is a walker's spot more than a sightseer's one. The paths are straightforward enough for families with younger children, though the ground can be boggy in winter - wellies aren't optional after rain. You're looking at anything from a quick 30-minute loop if you're just popping down from town, to a couple of hours if you're following the full circuit and actually noticing things. It's free, obviously, being public riverside land.

The meadows work brilliantly as a break between park days. You can walk it in the morning before heading to Salisbury Camping and Caravanning Club Site or Coombe Caravan Park, both within easy driving distance. Or do it on a quieter afternoon when you've had enough of structured activities. Birdwatchers get excited about it - herons, kingfishers if you're patient - and in spring the wildflowers make it worth lingering. It's not dramatic, but it's real, and that matters.
