Saint Rufus Park

The paths through Saint Rufus Park wind through proper moorland - heather, rough grass, and the occasional surprised grouse launching itself into the air. It's a nature reserve that doesn't shout about itself, which is rather the point. You're in Aberdeenshire here, close enough to Keith that it's a decent half-day loop from a holiday base, but far enough into the landscape to feel genuinely remote.

What you get is walking, mostly. The reserve is managed for wildlife rather than manicured trails, so it rewards people who like their nature a bit rough around the edges. Birdwatchers will find it properly worthwhile - golden eagles work this patch of the Highlands, and the moorland birds are year-round residents. It's the sort of place where you actually need binoculars and patience rather than just a photo opportunity.

Families with young children might find it a bit limited - there's no obvious visitor centre or café, and the appeal is subtle rather than immediate. But if your kids are the type who'll spend an hour spotting birds and collecting interesting stones, they'll be absorbed. Allow at least two hours, more if you're serious about wildlife spotting.
